The General Purpose
Rating Course was introduced on request from the Shipping Industry, in
order to ensure enhanced and multiple utility of ratings, on board vessels
belonging to shipping companies, the erstwhile Deck Rating and Engine Rating
courses were adapted to the new guidelines and concept of "General Purpose
Rating" was introduced by the Directorate. This ensured higher
employ-ability of the Indian seafarers in world market.
The duration of the Pre-Sea Training Course For General
Purpose Ratings is 6 months. The course is fully residential as per the
Directorate General of Shipping norms, requiring all the trainees to reside
in-house. The course will cover all aspects of the sea-faring profession which also include swimming, physical drills,
workshop training, Pre Sea Training for Ratings will also include the,
following basic STCW 2018 courses
GP Rating stands for General Purpose Rating. It is a 6 months long course. After completion of the course, candidates may join Merchant Navy ships as Deck or Engine crew. Along with sea service, they may also rise through ranks, depending on their performance.
Age limit
Between 17½ to 25 years of age when the course starts.
Educational Qualifications
Candidates must have passed 10th standard examinations from a Recognized board. Minimum marks requirement is 40%.
Deck Rating course
Though GP Ratings course covers aspects of deck crew training, separate deck crew training courses are also available. The pre sea training course lasts 6 months.
Engine Rating course
Though GP Ratings course covers aspects of engine crew training, separate engine crew training courses are also available. The pre sea training course lasts 6 months.
